From ABCs to D.B.I.E.s: Framing Equity for Today’s Leaders
In a season of learning and growth, clarity matters. Here’s how the principles of Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion, and Equity serve as the building blocks for equitable leadership.
This year has brought a continued wave of misinformation about the principles and practices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Too often that misinformation conflates DEI with discrimination.
In the spirit of the Back-to-School season, a time of ABCs and 123s where questions spark new perspectives, we’d like to reframe the conversation with a different kind of lesson: the D.B.I.E.s –– Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion, and Equity. At a time when these principles are often misunderstood or misrepresented, bringing clarity and definition is more important than ever.
D is for Diversity:
The demographic data that tells us who is at the table, capturing the mix of identities, backgrounds, and experiences within the team, company, or community.
B is for Belonging:
The feeling people experience when they can bring their full identity to the table and know they are welcome.
I is for Inclusion:
The intentional actions leaders take to ensure teams and companies reflect the broader community, with everyone having both a seat at the table and a voice in the outcome.
E is for Equity:
The future state we strive toward, where barriers to access and opportunity are removed so teams, companies, and communities can realize their full potential.
Working through the principles and practices of the D.B.I.E.s is how we move toward equitable outcomes. Only then can we meaningfully talk about meritocracy.
As lifelong learners and leaders, let’s begin this school year grounded in the truth. The D.B.I.E.s are neither illegal nor risky endeavors. They are not tools of discrimination. They are foundational building blocks, each one supporting the next, that guide us toward equity and shared success. At its core, the D.B.I.E.s remind us that everyone is part of the picture, and every experience has a role in shaping the communities we build.
