The Flow State of Leadership
Capability, Capacity, and Conditions
In sports and in life, there are rare moments when everything aligns: our capability (what we can do), capacity (what we have to give), and conditions (the context we’re in). When these are in sync, we find flow…performance feels effortless, and we surpass expectations.
Earlier this year, my oldest son had one of those moments. Everything clicked, his preparation, energy, even the weather, and he broke a long-standing school javelin record. It was one of those days where the wind is at your back, the runway clear, and the sky wide open.
But not every day is like that. Sometimes, the winds shift.
Resetting Expectations
When we hit a new high, we start measuring every future effort against that mark. But capability alone isn’t enough. Capacity fluctuates. Conditions change. And on days when we’re drained or the world pushes back, even our best efforts can fall short.
After that record throw, my son had tougher meets. I reminded him: performance isn’t just about skill. It’s also about context. About recognizing when things are out of sync and giving ourselves grace in those moments.
That same truth applies to leadership, entrepreneurship, and especially to those of us doing the hard work of equity.
Grace and Grit in Equity Work
At THM Advisors, we help partners build the capability to lead equitable development. But progress also requires the capacity to act and conditions that support bold moves.
Even with growing capabilities, capacity can fluctuate with team bandwidth, organizational readiness, or personal stamina. And conditions, whether political, economic, or cultural, often present headwinds that push against our efforts.
That’s where grace becomes essential. Progress in equity isn’t always linear. Some days we hit new heights; other days, we’re simply putting one foot in front of the other. Every effort matters even if it doesn’t set a new record.
There are days when everything aligns. The tailwinds are strong, our energy is high, and we move in flow. And then there are the days when we’re climbing into the wind and facing resistance, fatigue, and real-world limits. The challenge is staying the course, even when the summit feels far off.
Because not every step is meant to break records. Sometimes, the win is just continuing the climb.
Still Climbing
In our last newsletter, I described this work as a mountain climb with a hidden summit. That still holds true. Just like climbers acclimate at base camp, our work sometimes calls us to recalibrate, refocus our energy, reassess our resources, and respond to changing conditions. Some days, we pause to regroup. Others, we power upward. But we’re not going back down.
As you reflect on your work:
- Are the conditions creating tailwinds or headwinds?
- What’s limiting your capacity?
- What’s one step you can take, even if it’s small?
Whether you are ascending confidently or catching your breath, know that forward is forward. Elevating equity work is a long arc, and conditions will shift again. Our job is to be ready.
Keep climbing. The summit is still ahead.
