As you scale the mountain of life, there are moments – like now – when the obstacles in your path slow your pace…when the elevation of the climb takes your breath away…or when the pressure to turn around feels real.
The Early Ascent: First Steps Towards Equity
Five years ago, when I began my entrepreneurial journey, I often described the feeling of leaving the corporate commercial real estate world as standing at the base of a mountain. My family and network of supporters stood beside me, ready for the adventure ahead.
As I looked upward into the fog-draped terrain, I could just make out the early steps of the path—but the summit was hidden, out of sight. I was filled with a bundle of emotions: excitement for what was possible, fear of the uncertainty that might lie beyond the mist, and determination lighting an inner fire to chart a new course.
Since launching THM Advisors in the fall of 2019, building a social impact enterprise has been nothing short of a climb—challenging, stressful, and deeply rewarding. The last five years have been filled with both tailwinds and headwinds. Ascending this mountain has required preparation, planning, and persistence.
Base Camp Reflections: Charting the Path Ahead
As I reflect on where I stand today, I find myself at what I describe as the first base camp. This is not the summit, but it’s a significant milestone and my journey to reach this point was made possible with the help of a collaborative network of guides, partners, and friends. Base camp is a place to rest and recover, to connect and celebrate with teammates on the accomplishments to date, and to prepare for the next ascent. It’s a vantage point—a moment to pause and reflect on the miles traveled, reassess the terrain, and map the next steps.
The economic, social, and political landscape in our world today present a unique set of obstacles and challenges. There are moments—like now—when the pressure to turn around is real. And for some, descending back to a lower elevation is necessary: a chance to regroup, recharge, and rebuild strength. In other cases, when the trail becomes impassable, it may require us to descend partway or simply pause at base camp in order to discover a new route to the summit.
As we navigate through the headwinds on our way to the next camp, the methods and techniques will change. But here’s what hasn’t changed: the vision. The goal remains in place. The mission and the resolve do not waver. What shifts is the strategy—the route we take to survive, strive, and ultimately thrive.
Climbing Together Towards Equity
This climb reminds me of the journey so many of us are on—entrepreneurs, changemakers, leaders working to shift paradigms. It’s not easy work. But the path to equitable development, like that mountain, is worth every effort. And no one climbs alone.
